What Measure PDF does

Measure PDF calibrates a document against a length you know, then measures distances, perimeters and areas anywhere on the page in real-world units and draws them onto a downloadable copy.

A PDF has no inherent scale — a floor plan, a survey, a map or a cutting diagram is just shapes on a page until you tell it what those shapes are worth. Once you do, the geometry is exact, because the page is drawn in precise units under the hood. The catch is that the number you care about (metres, feet, inches) is never stored; only the drawing is.

So this tool starts by asking you to calibrate: draw a line over something whose real length you know — a scale bar, a labelled wall, a dimension line — and type that length. From then on every distance and area you draw is reported in your units. Measurements are drawn onto a copy you can download and share, and the whole thing runs in your browser, which matters for plans and surveys you would rather not upload.

How to use Measure PDF

   Upload the PDF

   Drop in the plan, map or diagram you want to measure. Every page renders so you can work on it.

   Calibrate against a known length

   With Calibrate selected, click the two ends of something whose real length you know, then type that length and unit. That sets the scale.

   Measure distances and areas

   Switch to Distance (two clicks) or Area (click each corner, then Close shape). Each measurement shows its value in your units.

   Download the marked-up copy

   Click Download with measurements to save a PDF with the lines and figures drawn on. Your original is untouched.

Measure PDF: details and limits

• The measurements are only as accurate as the calibration. Calibrate against the longest known length you can — a long scale bar beats a short one, because any error in placing the two clicks is spread over more distance.

• Areas scale by the square of the calibration, which is handled for you: a plan measured in metres reports areas in square metres, not metres. The unit label shows it (m², cm²).

• Calibration applies to the page you set it on and to others at the same scale. A PDF that mixes scales across pages needs re-calibrating per page.

• A measurement pins to the page you drew it on, at the page’s own coordinates, so it stays put regardless of how you zoom or resize the view.

• Marks are drawn as real lines and text on top of the page, mutate-in-place, so the document’s existing text stays selectable underneath. Your original file is never modified — only the downloaded copy carries the marks.
