What Extract Images does
Extract Images pulls the original photographs and graphics embedded inside a PDF out as separate image files, rather than screenshotting the pages.
This is a different job from PDF to JPG and the distinction matters. Converting a page gives you a picture of the whole page — text, margins and all. Extracting gives you the actual image objects the document has inside it: the photo, the logo, the scanned figure, at whatever size and quality it was embedded.
That is what you want when you need the picture back out of a report, brochure or catalogue rather than a snapshot of the page it sits on. The tool scans each page for image objects, decodes them on your device and shows you what it found.

Extract Images: details and limits
These are the embedded images at their original resolution — often larger and sharper than the page appears on screen.
Text and vector graphics are not extracted, because they are not images. A PDF that looks full of "pictures" but is actually vector artwork will legitimately yield nothing.
One-bit black-and-white scans do come out, including old fax-style documents. What gets missed is narrower and has nothing to do with colour depth: inline images (small ones written directly into the page instructions rather than stored as objects) and stencil masks, which are painted by a different instruction than the one this scans for.
A logo repeated on all forty pages is exported once, not forty times — images are matched by their identity inside the file, so duplicates collapse.
Everything comes out as PNG, whatever it was stored as. That is lossless, but re-encoding an embedded JPEG photo as PNG usually makes the file bigger than the original inside the PDF.
Images under 4 pixels a side are skipped as spacers and rules rather than listed as finds.
If a scan turns up nothing but you just want a picture of the page, PDF to JPG or PDF to PNG will always work.

What “extract images” actually pulls out of a PDF
Extracting images pulls the real embedded pictures out at full resolution — not a page screenshot. What it finds, what it dedupes, and what it quietly misses.
