How to rotate a PDF in Adobe Acrobat — or free, without it

5 min readHow to

To rotate a PDF in Adobe Acrobat, choose All tools, then Organize pages, select the pages, click Rotate page left or Rotate page right, and save. That is paid Acrobat. The free Reader only turns the view. Rotate PDF saves the turn free in your browser, with nothing uploaded.

Acrobat has two rotate commands that look alike and do different things. One turns the page inside the file. The other turns your view of it and forgets the moment you close the document. Only the first is worth saving, and it is in the paid app. This covers both, the free route that needs no Adobe account, and what our own rotate tool does to the file, checked by running it.

How do I rotate a PDF in Adobe Acrobat?

Open the PDF in Acrobat and choose All tools, then Organize pages. Select the pages to turn, click Rotate page left or Rotate page right, then save the file. Each click is a quarter turn, and the save is what makes it permanent.

  1. Open Organize pages

Open the PDF in Acrobat and choose All tools, then Organize pages. Older versions keep the same tool under Tools.

  2. Choose the pages

Use the Pages selected menu to pick Even pages, Odd pages or All pages, or type the page numbers you want.

  3. Pick a direction

Click Rotate page left for a quarter turn counterclockwise, or Rotate page right for a quarter turn clockwise.

  4. Save the file

Close the tools pane and save the PDF. Save under a new name if you want the original kept as it was.

How do I rotate an entire PDF in Adobe?

In Organize pages, open the Pages selected menu, choose All pages, and click Rotate page left or Rotate page right once. Every page turns a quarter turn together. In Rotate PDF the same job is the Rotate all 90° button, which turns every page clockwise.

Why is my PDF not rotating?

Usually because the command was View, then Rotate view. Adobe's help page for rotating says the original page orientation is restored the next time you open the PDF. Organize pages is the command that changes the file, and it belongs to paid Acrobat, not the free Reader.

Rotate PDF has its own version of this. The Apply rotation button stays disabled until at least one tile shows a turn, and four taps on the same tile add up to a full circle, which counts as no turn at all.

Can I rotate a PDF without Adobe Pro?

Yes. Adobe has a free rotate tool on its website, and it works on a PDF you upload to Adobe. To rotate with no upload and no account, Rotate PDF changes the file inside your browser tab and downloads the result.

  1. Open the tool

Open Rotate PDF in any browser. It is a web page, so there is nothing to install and no account to make.

  2. Drop in the PDF

Add one PDF. Each page appears as a numbered tile. The tile shows a page icon, not a picture of your page.

  3. Tap the pages to turn

Tap a tile to turn that page a quarter turn clockwise. Rotate all 90° turns every page. Reset clears the turns you have added.

  4. Apply

Click Apply rotation. The file downloads with _rotated added to its name.

A saved rotation is written into the file. A view rotation is gone when the document closes.

The PDF is not uploaded at any point. It is read and rewritten by code running in the tab, and there is no server to send a file to. The plain rotate walkthrough goes further into how the tiles count, and phone users have how to rotate a PDF on iPhone.

How can I rotate a PDF 180 degrees?

Turn it twice. In Acrobat, click Rotate page right two times. In Rotate PDF, tap the tile twice and its label reads 180°. There is one direction here, clockwise, so a counterclockwise quarter turn is three taps, and the label reads 270°.

What is the shortcut to rotate a PDF?

Adobe's guide for Windows lists Shift+Ctrl+Plus for clockwise and Shift+Ctrl+Minus for counterclockwise. Both drive the Rotate view command, so they turn what you see and not the file. Rotate PDF has no shortcut keys. You tap or click the tiles.

What does Acrobat do that the free route does not?

  • Both directions. Acrobat has a left button and a right button. Rotate PDF turns clockwise only.
  • Page presets. Acrobat picks even pages, odd pages or a typed list in one go. Rotate PDF offers one tile at a time, or every page.
  • Thumbnails. Acrobat lays the pages out as thumbnails in Organize pages. The tiles here carry a page number and an icon, so you need to know which pages are sideways before you start.

Neither rotate command straightens a scan that sits a few degrees crooked. A PDF stores page rotation in quarter turns only, so a slight tilt is a job for a scanner setting or an image editor.

What does rotating in the browser change in the file?

We ran the tool on test files and read the results with a different PDF engine from the one that wrote them. A four-page file with pages stored at 0, 90, 270 and 0 degrees, the first three tapped once each, came back at 90, 180, 0 and 0. The text, the title and a form field were intact, and the untouched fourth page gained no rotation entry. In a second file, every page inherited a 90 degree turn from the document and carried none of its own. Tapping page one gave 180 on that page and left the other three at 90.

Only the pages you tap are rewritten. The rest keep whatever rotation they arrived with.

Two things changed that nobody asked for. The Producer field, which names the software that last wrote the file, came back naming pdf-lib, the library this tool is built on, and the modification date was set to the moment of the run. The title, the creator and the creation date were kept. What PDF metadata reveals covers those fields.

Does it rotate a locked PDF?

A PDF that needs a password to open is refused, with the message "This PDF is password-protected. Unlock it first, then try again." Unlock PDF removes the password when you know it. A PDF that opens freely but carries editing restrictions is accepted and rotated.

That second case has a side effect. In our test the restricted file went in encrypted and the rotated copy came out with no encryption at all, so the restrictions did not travel with it. On that file the Producer and the modification date were left exactly as they arrived.
