How to convert PDF to JPG on Android (and keep page order)

5 min readHow to

Open PDF to JPG in Chrome, choose the PDF and tap Convert to JPG. Each page is rendered on the phone and nothing is uploaded. The pages carry no date taken and share one saved time, so sort them by name, not by date.

Android's built-in PDF viewers can show you a PDF, but they have no button that saves a page as a picture. Search for how to do it and you get the Acrobat app, converter apps from the Play Store and sites that upload the file. A Chrome tab does it on the phone with none of those. This covers that route, and the part no other guide here covers: what your gallery app makes of the pages once they arrive.

How do I convert a PDF to JPG on Android?

Open PDF to JPG in Chrome, choose the PDF, pick Standard or High resolution and tap Convert to JPG. Every page is rendered in the tab on your phone and nothing is uploaded. One page downloads as a JPG; a longer document downloads as one .zip of numbered JPGs.

  1. Open the page in Chrome

Open PDF to JPG in Chrome on your phone. It is an ordinary web page, so there is no app to install and no account to make.

  2. Choose the PDF

Tap the upload area and pick the file. The page count appears once the file has been read.

  3. Pick a resolution

Standard is about 108 DPI, for screens, chat and upload forms. High is about 216 DPI, for printing or zooming in.

  4. Set the JPG quality

The slider starts at 90% and runs from 50% to 100%. Lower means smaller files and softer edges around text.

  5. Convert and download

Tap Convert to JPG, wait for the thumbnails, then tap download. Report.pdf becomes Report_page-01.jpg and onwards, inside Report_jpg.zip when there is more than one page.

Is there a quick way to convert PDF to JPG?

For one page, a screenshot is quickest. On most Android phones you press Power and Volume down together, then crop. A screenshot holds only the pixels your screen showed, though, so for a whole document, or a page you will print, render it instead.

Rendering works from the page itself, not the screen. A US Letter page comes out 918 by 1188 pixels on Standard and 1836 by 2376 on High, whatever phone you use. The plain PDF to JPG walkthrough explains when PNG is the better format, and for a page of black text it usually is: PDF to PNG keeps the letters sharp.

How do I open the .zip of pages on Android?

Unzip it in Files by Google. Open the app, go to Downloads, tap the .zip and tap Extract, which is the route Google's own help page gives. You get a folder of JPGs named after the PDF and numbered by page, ready to share or move into an album.

Why are my PDF pages out of order in Google Photos or Gallery?

Because a gallery sorts by date, and the pages give it nothing to sort with. The JPGs carry no date-taken tag, and every page in the .zip has the same saved time, to the second. Page order lives only in the file names, so browse them in Files and sort by name.

We checked this ourselves. We turned a twelve-page test PDF into JPGs with the tool's own converter and zip code in a Chromium browser, the engine Chrome on Android uses, and read the bytes with our own parser, not the zip library that wrote them. No JPG had a date-taken tag (there is no EXIF block at all), and all twelve entries in the .zip were stamped with the same second. That time was also stored in UTC, in a field that the zip format reads as local time. Two unzippers on a PC, Windows tar and PowerShell, both gave the pages a time four hours in the future, in Toronto. We have not tested an Android unzipper, so yours may stamp the time you extracted instead.

Every page carries the same saved time, so a gallery that sorts by date cannot tell page one from page twelve.

Google's Photos community answers say the same thing from the other side: a picture without a date-taken entry falls out of date order. Two smaller points follow from the same bytes.

  • Page numbers are padded to two digits. Past page 99, a list sorted letter by letter puts page-100 between page-10 and page-11, so for a very long PDF, check the last pages by eye.
  • The JPGs do not record a print resolution. The header stores only a shape ratio, not 108 or 216 DPI, so a print app has to guess the size. Pick the paper size when you print rather than trusting the default.

How can I convert a PDF to an image for free on Android?

The Chrome route here is free, with no page limit, no sign-up and no watermark. Adobe's page on phone conversion describes Export PDF, then Image, then JPEG in the Acrobat Reader app; we have not tested it. Upload sites such as Smallpdf work on the file on their own server.

Smallpdf says it deletes documents an hour after processing, which tells you the file went to its server. PDF to JPG renders each page inside your Chrome tab, with the PDF engine and its worker loaded from this site, not a CDN. There is no server to send the file to, which matters for a bank statement or an ID document.

Why will my PDF not convert to JPG?

  • A PDF that needs a password to open is refused with a message, not rendered blank. Run it through Unlock PDF first.
  • There is no page picker. The tool converts every page, so for two pages out of fifty, take them out with Extract Pages and convert that smaller file.
  • Stay on the tab while it runs. Pages are drawn on the browser's animation frames, which pause when Chrome is not on screen, so switching to another app stops the progress bar until you come back.

How do I make a JPEG into a PDF on Android?

That is the reverse trip, and it has its own tool: JPG to PDF puts one photo on each page, also in the Chrome tab. The photo to PDF guide for Android covers the phone side, including the few seconds of video many Android cameras save inside a photo, which JPG to PDF carries into the PDF unless you use Scan to PDF instead.
