How to merge PDF on Mac — Preview, Finder, or a browser tab
To merge PDFs on a Mac, select them in Finder and choose Quick Actions then Create PDF, or drag their thumbnails together in Preview. For locked files or any Mac that is not yours, open Merge PDF in a browser and combine them on your device — nothing is uploaded.
Merging PDFs is one of the jobs a Mac genuinely handles on its own. Preview already opens the file, and both Preview and a Finder right-click will combine several PDFs into one with no download and no account. This is the honest version: the two built-in routes, and the specific cases where opening a browser tab is the better free answer.
Does Apple have a PDF merger?
Yes, two of them, both free and built in. The fastest is Finder: select the PDFs in the order you want, right-click, and choose Quick Actions then Create PDF. A combined file appears in the same folder. Preview is the other, and it is the one to reach for when you need to reorder pages before saving.
How do I combine PDF files in Preview?
Open the first PDF in Preview, choose View then Thumbnails to show the sidebar, then drag each other PDF from Finder into that sidebar where you want its pages to land. Drag thumbnails up or down to reorder, then choose File then Export as PDF to write the combined file.
Drop each file onto the sidebar itself, not onto the middle of a page thumbnail — dropping onto a page can attach the PDF as an annotation instead of merging its pages, which is the root of most "Preview would not combine my PDFs" complaints. And use Export as PDF rather than plain Save, so you keep your originals.
When is a browser tool the better free option?
When the file is locked, when the Mac is not yours to leave anything on, or when you would rather order whole files in a list than wrestle Preview's thumbnail sidebar. Merge PDF does the same job in Safari or Chrome, the same way on any macOS version, and builds the file on your Mac.

Can I merge a password-protected PDF on a Mac?
Not until you unlock it, and the tool tells you which one. If any file in the list has an open password, Merge PDF stops and names it — it says that file is password-protected and to unlock it first — rather than failing the whole batch with no clue which of ten is locked. Remove the password with Unlock PDF, then merge.
What gets lost when you combine PDFs?
Combining PDFs builds one new document out of your pages, so anything that lived at the document level rather than on a page stays behind — whichever route you take. We measured our own merge: the pages, their text and their images come through exactly, but interactive form fields, bookmarks and the Title and Author fields do not. The form case is the one that bites, because the boxes still look like boxes and are no longer fillable. If a filled form matters, flatten it first so the answers become part of the page.
